Just had an email from our CO saying that the Medical Assessor has returned our 17yr old son's medical, as he stated he wanted a specialist review of his Osgood Schlatters, rather than the extensive report we submitted from our GP. :curse::curse:

If anybody Googles this condition, they will see that it is a very common occurance in teenage boys. It is basically growing pains in the knee. There is no treatment other than paracetamol and rest if it gets really painful. They grow out of it after around 2 years and it has no further impact on their life!

So, we now have until 12th September to find a specialist (we don't have private medical insurance), get them to see Sam, write a report without laughing and it's Bank Holiday now, so we can't even start on it until Tuesday! :curse::curse:

Sorry to hear they want to get another report done, I know our local BMI hospital has a nurse drop in centre perhaps they could get you an appointment sorted today?? I know it is more money but if this is the last hurdle??

I agree it doesn't make any sense. I think probably it's just that you're the victim of the "tick in the box mentality". In other words, your son's condition, being less common, probably isn't on their official list of conditions and corresponding decisions. No doubt there's some rule that says "if it's not on this list, then you must get a specialist report, regardless of whether it's considered serious.". On the upside, this probably means that the simplest of letters, as long as it comes from a recognised specialist will be all it takes.
Also, I wouldn't worry too much about the timescale. Phone your GP, explain, and ask him/her to refer you to an appropriate specialist (they will know one) as a private patient. They can do this easily with a fax or an email. You'll be amazed at how quickly you'll be seen if you're a paying customer - probably within a day or two - a week at the most.
At least you won't need any treatment - hopefully all they will have to do is briefly examine your son and provide a suitable report.

Thank you everyone for the support and advice. You should see the email I wrote (and didn't send!!!!) in reply!
Beginning to wonder if the MA is even a doctor - if I can look up a condition I knew nothing about, I would have thought they would have the ability to do the same!

Well, we're off to see someone, for an orthopaedic review of my son's growing pains - let's see if this does the trick, or will they query something else????? :D

Hope you get on well. Be interesting to hear what the ortho man says. Our 10 year old girl has been diagnosed last week with Osgoods and is suffering quite badly with it. :(

Think we need to buy some growbags and get this puberty lark over and done with quick :D

Just back from ortho man. He did a thorough physical of Sam and can't believe that the MA is insisting on a specialist review as it is so common and has no impact on your life once it stops!
He is sending him for an x-ray to see if something has fused which would be good and then we can send x-ray up to the MA. More money! :(

Kev and Sarah - Sam had ultrasound with physio at local GP, which he said was a big help. The physio stuck bits of plaster on his knees for support. He also had to have inserts in his shoes as flat feet are a by product of this. Again that helped. It has taken around two years and he has had to give things up when it got too painful but he is coming out of it now. Best of luck to your little girl! :thumbup:

Thanks for the info Chippy, off to the physio this morning, so will mention your son's treatment, although the pyshio has already picked up on the flat feet thing. My girl is seriously into her gymnastics so is taking this quite hard at the mo, I'll just be glad when this 'flare up' is over for her sake

Yes. Very best of luck to both of you . Have some karma. I suffered tremendously with 'growing pains' when I was a young teenager, so I feel for your kids having to put up with this rotten , painful ,aching condition. Everything crossed that both these kids come out the other end of this quickly.

Sam's had his x-ray (£80 - £90). Then it's back to specialist who charged £50.00 (cheaper than I was expecting!) for initial consultation, for further consultation and a letter to MA, hopefully saying everything fine, that he's grown out of growing pains and that he won't be a drain on their resources!! :D

Ok, two visits, one xray and a letter, £200.00 down. Fingers crossed this will do the trick!
