Health Requirements

If someone has had cancer in the past e.g. prostate cancer and is now clear, does that still rule them out of emigrating to New Zealand?
With Canada if anyone has suffered a serious illness like cancer they are immediately ruled out.

I cannot see anything on the medical forms that say you would be rules out. It would probably go to the medical assessor, as long as you have Consultant/GP letters confirming that all is clear that will take that into consideration.

I have a paper copy of Appendix 4.10 of the Ops Manual (which I can't at the moment find on the new site) covering Acceptable Standards of Health.
Ah! http://onlineservices.immigration.go...nual/46506.htm

It has a paragraph on malignancies of organs and skin and haematopoietic (?) tissue.

Says you are O.K. if the interval since treatment is such that the probability of recurrence is less than 10%.

Ok thank you.
The prostate was removed. Prostatectomy.
It had no signs of metastasis.
I was told a year after my op that as my PSA was still unrecordable the chance of any return was less than 2%.
It's now just over three years and PSA is still unrecordable.
Not sure where my surgeon got the 2% statistic from but he is one of the top surgeons in his field in the UK.

Glad it went well for you.

You can always get your surgeon involved if there are any queries.

As far as I can tell if there are any "grey" areas then the whole thing is referred for review, so you should have a chance to fight your corner.

This isn't true necessarily.
Canada looks at the potential cost to the health care system and makes a decision based on that.

If you are cancer free with a low chance of recurrence then it is possible to pass the medical

Sorry, also should have said congratulations on beating the cancer. My dad's had that variety for over 5 years now, seems to be living with it.
