Having a Baby in NZ

Just a word of advice regarding having a baby when you are in NZ on a Work to Residence permit or any other permit excluding residence.

After I had my Bubs we registered her birth with Births, Deaths and Marriages and we received a letter stating that as we are not residents our Bubs will not be a resident but if we agree with this then DO NOTHING and her Birth Certificate will be sent out on October 8th!

After 5 phone calls and 1 fax we finally received her certificate on the 20th December and, after making a complaint was told it was 'human error'.

So, if you have a child ring, ring and ring again until you finally receive them!

If neither parent is a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, then your child is not a New Zealand citizen by birth and cannot get a New Zealand passport.

Get child a passport from your home country and have visa (same as yours) put into it.

This has been the law since 1.1.06
