Question Have to put on the brakes!

Hi there,
Don't know where to begin- so rather than ramble hope someone out there can answer my question.

When you receive a letter from NZ Immigration saying your application for residency has been 'approved in principle' and you send your passport off straight away but your residency permit is not put into your passport until 5 months later- what day did your residency begin- When it was approved in principle or when it was put into passport?

Look on your personal page on the web or check on your visa in your passport.

Thanks for trying to help.
Unfortunately it's not my passport- it's my son's.
He is sponsoring us. He's been living in NZ for 5 years now- family (NZ partner and our two only grandchildren) He was there on a work permit originally and only applied for residency in Oct 04. He received a letter saying it had been approved in principle in March 05 but on filling in the sponsor forms has realised that the date of the permit in his passport is August 05.
The thought of putting everything on hold until 09 (at our age) is daunting.
I do appreciate there are many people with much worse set backs but I guess we feel time is at a premium now.
Thanks anyway
Jennie
