I have an RRV granted in Dec 1996 and the corresponding Residence permit stamped at the airport granting me indefinate leave. That expired when we left NZ after our holiday in Jan 1997. That RRV then expired as we had no plans to return to NZ (don't ask, let's just call it, 'family garbage' and leave it at that). I expect that is what will happen on arrival next February. However, I'm going to have to contact NZIS regarding my PR status as I want a definate answer. If I apply for citizenship after 5 years I don't want to be told I should have got PR first.

Just to clarify I now have a new, current RRV in my passport, but no sign of permanent residency. Perhaps family catergory visas and working visas are slightly different. It'll all come out in the wash.

That was presumably in an old passport?
