Doctorate years recognized as work experience ?

Hi all,

Has anyone asked for his doctorate years to be recognized as work experience ?
As you are part researching and part teaching, I would think these could be taken into account as work experience for the EOI.

Thanks in advance for your help !

I'm not sure on NZ, but you would need to see if the Institution you gained the qualification from is on the list of places that are exempt from assessment if not then you would need to apply for assessment of the qualification http://www.immigration.govt.nz/opsmanual/35171.htm

The institution is clearly indicated as exempt from assessment.
The doctorate will be recognized as qualification without a doubt.

What I'm wondering is if your doctorate is also taken into account as work experience.

Here is the logic:
In Belgium, a PhD takes between 4 and 6 years to complete.
During this time, you receive a salary, paying for the research you conduct and the courses you teach.

In NZ immigration point calculation, a Master degree will get you the same number of points as a doctorate. However, a doctorate takes much longer to get. Hence, I'm wondering if it counts as work experience, giving you some additional points.
Otherwise PhDs are very disadvantaged.

only info I could find was on Canada and I read it as not able to be applied towards work experience as its classed as learning.

Hopefully someone will come along who can point you in the right direction.

How many points do you have without it counting towards experience?

so close.
your best bet if no one comes along soon is to just call your local NZ immigration office and ask them.

Can you give a break down of your points?

Hmmm they might accept it or they might not, which doesn't help you! You may be able to claim for the teaching:unsure: but I'd be more dubious about the research side. I think contacting INZ as mentioned above may be the best option. Ideally you want 140 pts or a job offer to guarantee selection.
History of selection points

This might be relevant:

Another way you can get points for your work experience is if the work experience required, or helped you gain, specialist, technical, or management skills and experience. Those skills and experience must be relevant to an occupation that may be considered skilled employment
Bear in mind that you need to work at least 30 hrs per week for it to be classed as full-time. Eg you work for 2yrs doing 30hrs or more pw- this is 2yrs work experience. Do 15hrs pw for 2yrs, this is 1yr work experience and so on.
