Do we need to use NZQA...Please help

Hi
I am new to this site and am at the start of applying to emigrate to New Zealand with my hubby and 4 kids. He is a fully skilled engineer with a BTEC National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering. We have previously submitted an EOI which was rejected because the immigration officer only assessed his trade as a level 3 which he said wouldn't give him 50 points....because of this he couldn't give us the additional 30 points for his work experience.
To say they are short of engineers, I am finding it really difficult to get anywhere. Do we need to get his skills assessed with the NZQA or should we just start submitting his CV to as many recruitment agencies as we can.

Hi there

I am assuming that the case officer that looked at your EOI had some knowledge of previous cases etc, that made him/her think that your qualifications weren't going to get the correct level?

In my opinion, it depends on if there is any confusion about the level of skill your OH has. If you think he should have been given a higher level, then definitely get NZQA assessment because that will lay to rest any doubt. Also, if you can afford to fork out the money for the NZQA assessment, I would do one anyway because you will need one somewhere down the line I'm sure, whether it's to show employers or apply for PR once you have a job. Plus it might give you peace of mind and then you'll know what path you need to take next.

And if you don't get the level you expected, then you have nothing to lose by sending out CV. I've heard job market is pretty dismal at the moment so you might have better luck planning a trip over there to get inverviews, but if you have lots of experience in your line of work then you may be successful and be able to apply for work permit once you've secured a job offer.

Thanks for that, I have just submitted my hubby's qualifications through the NZQA, you are right we will need it doing at some point so that's that done!!
I actually rang the NZQA and they were extremely helpful and recognised my husbands quals over the phone which I found very reassuring.
