Wink Calling all teachers out there!!

Hi, Any teachers in NZ out there??

I could really do with finding a job, I'm a music teacher and have taught both secondary and primary pupils, my qualification is in secondary. I'm also really interested in working in special needs either junior or senior and would consider either post.

If anyone knows of any good posts coming up..... let me know, I'm in a position to settle anywhere.

Ta, Helen

Hi,
I'm a secondary teacher too, in PE. Hoping to be in NZ by Christmas this year. In case you haven't discovered it yet, check the EdGazette - it's the equivalent of our TES and lists all teaching jobs out there. Are you in NZ already or looking from the UK? I've just been through the NZQA and Teachers Council registration processes - bit of a bind but finally registered and now ready to apply for jobs. Let me now how you do!

We sent our EOI in before being registered with the Teachers Council, but the sooner you can get on with the registration the better. A condition of our Invitation to Apply for permanent residence (ITA) was that we were registered with the Teachers Council so if you sort this early you don't have to waste time doing it after receiving your ITA. It does take a while to get all the info together for Teachers Council registration i.e. references/police check etc so worth getting on to it as soon as possible. A piece of advice that I wish we'd received - you don't need to wait for your NZQA qualifications assessment result to be posted back to you before applying to the teachers council for registration (even though it says you do on the Teachers Council info). NZQA automatically send your qualifications assessment result to the Teachers Council on your behalf. Good luck - let us know how you get on.

Hi
My husband and I are both teachers and have applied to emigrate to NZ...waiting in the visa queue at the moment. I read with interest the comment re completing the NZQA and registering with the Teachers Council. It seeemed a really good idea to be getting on with this while we are waiting.
I had a look for the registration form etc but came up with nothing....just direction that it needed to be done!
How do I starrt these two processes please
Thanks
Viv

NZQA assess your UK qualifications and score them with a level according to their equivalent NZ qualification. You complete the forms online at http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/for-internat...nal/index.html. To teach in NZ you also have to register with the NZ Teachers Council. This is not done online (they're a little behind!), you print off the application and send off along with the documents they require. You have to have your qualifications assessed by NZQA to get registration with the Teachers Council. See this website www.teacherscouncil.govt.nz. If you need any more help just shout!

Hi
Thanks for the reply and helpful links. I have a UK Bachelor Hons degree which translated to level 8 on the EOI form I completed...i.e. the form recognised the qualification. Do I also need to complete the NZQA form found on the link you included?
I understand the bit about needing to register with the Teachers Council out there thanks...I shall get onto this!

Hi Viv, I'm a bit confused about where you're at with your application? Basically, the NZQA qualifications pre-assessment result is enough to send off with your EOI. If your EOI gets selected from the pool and you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) NZIS may then ask you to complete an NZQA qualifications full-assessment report. Hope this clarifies.

Hi again
We have been selected at the EOI stage and are now awaiting our paper work for the ITA stage. I took note of comments you made re the amount of time it can take to gather papers and apply for teacher registration etc so I was trying to make a start in anticpation!!!!! It does seem to take people around 2 to 3 months to get their ITA in...I am keen to whizz through this!!!!
Many of your comments DGH on several strands have been really constructive...thanks

Hi
Still waiting for the NZQA to verify our qualifications....then we can apply to the Teachers Council in New Zealand and....... then we can apply for jobs!!!!!!
So still waiting, but I went out a couple of weeks ago to Auckland and there were plenty of jobs at Secondary level and once the above two bodies have okayed us it seems there is not a problem from conversations I had.

Hi Viv,

As you'll see on my post here, my wife is trying to find a job as a Primary School teacher in NZ and (whilst still very early days) has so far been unsuccessful with replies from schools almost inferring that the only reason she hasn't progressed is that she isn't already in NZ.

I understand how this may be the case - e.g. from the school's perspective - but I'm just curious if it's actually going to be possible for her to secure a job whilst in the UK or if at some point we're going to have to take the plunge and go out there in the hope that she can find a job before we *have* to come back - which just seems like a huge gamble.

Hi
It certainly helps being out there and because there are so many hoops to jump through and a long time lag in getting a visa I think schools are wary as obvioulsy they cannot have a class of pupils and no teacher...it takes more than a school term to get verification from NZ Teachers council + a visa and jobs are not available earlier than that usually...so it seemed that if everything was in place and visa in hand it seemed OK but otherwise jobs are unlikely to come your way!!!!!

Primary teachers are not in such short supply but I found lots of openings in Auckland as their growth rate is very rapid at the moment...as long as you are not picky about being at the best school of course! Kids were much more enthusiastic and the education was more relaxed in a postive way I thought. i.e. a bit more rewarding than my experiences in the last 5yrs here (similar to when I stared 20yrs ago!)

We decided that we are just going for it...getting everything in place...take the family out (10 + 12yr old) and pick up whatever jobs are on offer in the short term at least (We are both teachers).

Hi,
We've found a similar situation. I've been applying for teaching jobs from here in the UK. I have been granted teachers council registration 'subject to confirmation' and I'm a head of PE here. On my applications I've stated that I'm in the final stages of the visa application process. No luck with the applications though. I'm thinking I'll have a better chance if I'm out there. We do have a dilemma however - OH is also a teacher and trained via a GTP which Teachers Council will not recognise. He may have to re-train even though he has 5 yrs experience! Bit of a battle ahead I think.

Hi
we have found NZQA a bit of a challenege but think we are there now but it has delayed our ITA by over a month. We really wanted to get the kids into the new NZ school year end of January but with processing times being 4 + 2 months total its a concern.
Was there a trick as to how you got your ITA through without a job offer so quickly....very impressive!!!
It would be great to keep in contact and know how you get on in NZ job hunting as you are nearly there. Both my husband and I are Head of PE Depts and are are chucking everything in to give this a go as I do reckon you need to be there to get the job offer!!
