Buying a car in NZ - which documents?

What documents should we have please from buying a car in NZ?
It was a new Japanese import so we went to get the new registration plates and have the documents for that, plus we have the receipt, but that's it. Should there be anything else?

Re: Buying a car in NZ - which documents?

Assuming you bought it from a dealer, you should always receive a CIN (Customer Information Notice). This is like a condition report and check on any finance owing etc.
They're usually in the windscreen or the door pocket and given to you with the car as they are of no use to the dealer when the car sold.
It's not a requirement for the dealer to give it to you but it is a requirement for a dealer to have one for any used car or import.

Other than this each vehicle has an ownership document, but the dealer usually completes it for the new owner and sends it off to NZTA. You shouldn't have a problem with this since you've registered it with new plates.
Since it's a japanese import I doubt it will have a service book or any service history. You can usually buy a blank service book from an NZ main dealer as well as an English handbook as you may have one in Japanese.
