British Nationality for Children

Hi

My friend has received her British nationality and is applying for her british passport. She has 2 children age 12 and 8 who were born in the UK but lived with their mother in Dubai. Now that she has received her British nationality what is the process for her children to receive their British nationality and passport? As they are minors and their mother has had her British Nationality granted do the children automatically receive a British nationality?

Your assistance will be very much appreciated?

Many thanks

How has she obtained her British nationality? (e.g. naturalisation, registration)

What is the relationship situation? You mention she (your friend) has 2 children, then also took about the children living with their mother in Dubai. Where are the children currently living?

Yes my friend has had her citizenship ceremony & received her british nationality certificate. Her 2 children have lived with her in Dubai. So does anyone know the process for her children to get their british nationality?

If children were born in the U.K. and are still under 18, they can be registered as British citizens under section 1(3) of the British Nationality Act.

Based on a U.K. born child where the parent becomes a British citizen (or permanent resident) subsequent to birth. It is not necessary for the child to have resident status in Britain.

The entitlement lapses if not applied for while children are minors.

Thank you for your reply. What do they need to do to register under Section 1(3)?

Perhaps stating the obvious - an application needs to be made to the Home Office on form MN1.

Thank you for the form. Can i please confirm a few things please? If the children are registered as british citizens can they apply for a british passport? Once they have turned 18 will they have to then apply for citizenship through Naturalisation or not? If so, the current fee for an under 18 to apply to be registered as british citizen is £673 will they have to make another payment currently £874 for Natualisation?

Hope to hear from you soon?

Many thanks

Sorry its me again hopefully this will be the last question for now. The supporting documents that have been asked to be sent are birth certificate or passport. The children have british birth certificates so will that be sufficient enough or will they need to send off the passports they travel with?

Many thanks

After reading the MN1 guidelines it states that "Children must be under 18 years old when the application is made. Once they reach the age of 18 they must apply for British Citizenship as adults either by registration where they have an entitlement or by naturalisation".

Does anyone know what this means? Will they have to make another application at 18 & pay another fee?

Many thanks

No they will not have to pay any more or re-apply, the statement you have given is to cover all children, so if they are under 18 and claim their British Citizenship that's it all done. No need to apply again, ever, the second half of the statement would only apply if they were OVER 18 at the time of application.

Not to my knowledge, there are very many people living in other parts of the world who have registerd their children as British Citizens without them ever visiting, in fact many may never visit, but it's just useful to have if you ever want to viisit or settle in the UK
