Question BMI Query

Hi just a quick question:

I'm 5'11 about 171/2 Stone and quite fit:

Swimming 3 or 4 Times a week approx. 5000m per session plus moutain biking, Surf Lifesaving.

I have completed triathlons moutain marathons all at this weight.

I have a swimmers build ie big Shoulders and chest. I've just done done my BMI calculation and as expected I come out as obese.

Do the medicals take build into account or would I be expected to loose almost 3 stone to get to overweight.

Any advice gatefully received.

Cheers

The Slipsurfer

hi slipsurfer

you are obviously fit and healthy so i would not worry at all, my husband is 6ft and 16 stone and muscular and although he was classed as overweight it was fine due to the muscle

hope this helps put your mind at rest

with regards

kirstie

You will have to have extra blood tests. I had to and was ok.

Actually now that I remember if you are over 30 on your BMI they can take go off your waist size (just above the belly button)which must be less than 102cm.
Thats 47 inches in old money

Actually that's a smidgen over 40 inches in old money. 102 divided by 2.54 equals 40.15 something something something...
The BMI as a measurement is crap. Most of the All Blacks come up as obese using that silly formula. Why can't the quacks come up with something better?

Yes you are correct.
I multiplied 102 by ten and came up with 1200

What if it's over the 30 mark? Is that a no-no then, or are extra tests required?

BMI's are not an effective way to measure obesity, cos we are all shapes and sizes. Your G.P will or should know this, failing that a good bout of food poisioning should do the trick

On the forms it says 'is the applicants BMI over 30, OR is their waist size over x for men, and y for women?'

If yes to the first, or to both, then further blood tests (costing 40 dollars) are required.

We know, cos we went through them.

My advice - suck your waist in when they do the measurements - I did
