Default BASIC QUALIFICATION QUERY

Just a quick query on the basic qualification points. Does the points for the basic qualification have to be in the area for which you want to apply e.g. my husband wants to apply for a visa under baker which is on the ISSL list, but unfortunately we are slightly short on points (just under the 100), he is however currently studying for a NVQ2 in Lean principles (manufacturing) which covers all industries and trades - could he claim points for basic qualification? If so this would give us the vital points we need.

I realise he will probably need it assessed first, but if you cant claim the points because its not in the same industry then there is no point in getting it assessed.

Any help greatfully received, thanks

Default Re: BASIC QUALIFICATION QUERY

Unfortunately being on the ISSL does not gain you extra points on the EOI. When the form mentions absolute skills shortages it refers to those jobs on the LTSSL only.
Being on the ISSL means that a temporary work visa can be issued without the employer having to prove that no NZer is able to do the job.

As to whether the job and qualification have to match, I'm not sure. I would imagine that that is necessary in some cases and is not in others. They are more likely to need to match when it comes to vocational qualifications. Eg my vocational degree and job match exactly. I could not legally do my job without the degree so NZIS would require matching. Conversely my degree could be used as a general qualification if I decided to do something completely different and would probably be seen as a basic qualification in its own right, in the way that say a history degree is a qualification and does not necessarily mean that your job involves history as such.

Hope that's not too waffley and that someone can come along who can say the same thing in one sentence!
