Australian Permanent Residency in New Zealand
 

We are British and have Australian permanent residency. We are considering moving to New Zealand because we do not like the town we have arrived in in Oz. Can anyone advise on whether Australian Permanent residency allows us to live/work in New Zealand also, or what (if any) credit this may give us if we wanted to apply to live in New Zealand.

If you look at http://www.immigration.govt.nz then it's clear that Australian permanent visa holders can usually live in NZ.

But you should understand that you will sooner or later lose your Australian resident status this way (spending time in NZ won't count) and if you don't qualify for a New Zealand returning resident visa or New Zealand citizenship you will have to go home.

Also, New Zealand citizens don't get full permanent resident rights in Australia any more and New Zealand residents get nothing at all. It's also 5 years for citizenship in NZ.

Are you sure you want to trade in your Australian status for something that might be much less valuable? Why not move somewhere else in Australia?
