Hi,

We emigrated to NZ via sponsorship in the Family Parent class. We were both retired & my son sponsored us, I was the principle applicant as he is my son and my husband (his step-dad) was also on the application. We did all the paperwork ourselves and didn't use an agent.

You will see comments on this forum that, I think most people did it themselves but you will also see remarks from folks who have used them. We worked through the paperwork methodically, getting all the original documents together that they required & if there was something we were not sure of we went onto the INZ website or else e-mailed our case officer for advice and even though there were stepchildren (all adults) on both sides and proving where the balance of my family resided, we did not have any
problems to speak of at all. It may seem a bit daunting when you print off all the pages of the application but it's not that difficult really. I would say - Go for it & do it yourselves and save yourself some money.

Hope this has been helpful. Good luck

Joan

I got a family category visa and permanent residency as I'm married to a New Zealander. We did all the paperwork ourselves. We too got the forms from NZ Immigration website. We also printed the advice on what supporting paperwork was required. On making the application first time, as one of the requirements I remember paying £50 for a private chest x-ray as I didn't need one because there was no doctor's referral. I just phoned the local Nuffield and popped down there at the agreed time ! That was in 1996, the muliple entry visa was granted, valid for 2 years. However, after a family row with the NZ inlaws in 1997 after our Christmas/New Year/Family wedding visit we both thought, forget it. We sure as hell won't be visiting again. So we just let the multiple entry visa expire without further comment.
However, in 2008 after a LOT of water had passed under the bridge, we had a continuing discussion about going to NZ to live. My husband wanted my family category visa re-issued. I thought it was to late and we would have to start all over again. Amazingly, it wasn't to late and after making the application with my kiwi husband as principal sponsor (or whatever the term was) my visa and PR was granted again ! OK, he had to write a letter in support of my application and I also got a phone call from NZ Immigration requesting information from me i.e. proof that we were in a stable relationship but in the end we got my 'blue stickers' put in my passport. All for about £20, better than the hundreds of pounds and hours and hours of inconveniece for medicals, police reports etc having to go back to square one.
Good luck with your plans. You seem to feel that you have already spent loads of money on immigration agents (which seems to be the norm) and, unfortunately got nowhere (supply your own remark).

Talking Re: Aplication under the Family Parent Class

Hi Michael

I was sponsored by my son and so was my husband, we did it all ourselves and are flying out next Wednesday, 26 October 2011!!!.

Our daughter went out on her own, she is a specialist nurse (intensive care babies) and she did all her own paperwork.

Our son went out with his Kiwi wife and they did all their own paperwork.

As other have said, you can do it, just start keeping all your bills, photos and getting full birth certificates etc., sorted. Lots of check lists but you will do it. All our Utility bills were in my husbands name so I got a few changed to my name.

Good luck.

I agree with what's already been said. Agents are expensive and, unless you can't read or write or speak English, a waste of money. It's an expensive enough process without the added expense of an Agent.

My OH and I and our son did it ourselves and I can't tell you how many times we checked and double checked the application forms to be certain we'd missed nothing (a form of paranoia sets in). Be absolutely truthful and you'll be fine

Don't think so in the parent category. We're in our early 70's.. I think it's 56 in the investor category where you have to have a million or two to invest
