NZ is also a small (relatively) job market, the more senior the position you are qualified for, the less of them there are in the country. I ran the Network Operations Centre for an ISP - that likely means that there would be say <4> people in the country doing that role...so take a good look at how specialised or broad your skills are and look at Seek, set up searches and you'll see how many roles are coming up of your shape,,, |

If you are coming from the UK you do not need to pre-apply for a visitor visa as it is a visa waiver country. Entry with a uk passport will allow you up to 6 months. Your completed entry card acts as your legal declaration and your visa will be applied electronically at the border. If you leave at the end of this visa you'll need to stay away for at least 6 months before you can come back as a visitor as you can then only be here a maximum 6 months in any 12 months period. If you decide you want to be in NZ longer you may apply to Immigration to stay the extra 3 months.
If you wish to stay longer straight from the off you can also pre-apply for a 9 month visitor visa (for a fee) which is the maximum period a person can stay as a visitor in any 18 month period. |

Not very encouraging news but I appreciate your honesty I arrived in New Zealand at the end of 2008. In those days, firms were making people redundant not taking new ones on so an immigrant with experience of a job that any IT worker could have a try at doing (all-be-it with varying levels of effectiveness) was not at the front of the queue. It took 18 months for me to get the first job and that was an entry-level (school leaver type) job at a bank that the hiring manager gave me as a favour to my wife who had started working there. It then took another year for me to secure a role in my usual field and even then that was a step backwards in seniority. (I might have got something quicker if I had accepted that backwards step a bit sooner - we'll never know). The job market is very different right now - the country is at full employment (by that I mean unemployment is below 5%) and most stories in the press about the job market these days are about shortages of workers. |

hopefully my lack of NZ experience will be slightly less of a problem if less kiwis are available for IT roles due to the high employment rates . |

in in terms of qualifications, my IT are all internal badges from my company . I did have Prince 2 and ITIL but they have expired recently . In your opinion are they worth getting for NZ job market ? They don’t hold much additional value here anymore as so many people have them and experience counts for more . I’d be interested in your opinion on the value for a NZ job hunt . I’d have to pay as obviously they cost a lot of money (and no, my company like most , wont pay for them) As a service delivery manager my skills are quite transfersble but this also has the effect of making them less specialist . my degree is not in IT. It’s in history but does value in at 7 points on the qualifications conversion table what I really need is some more info on these “local working practices “ that you mentioned previously. My cv and job experience are obviously very UK / USA centric working with IBM and more recently WIPRO |

MrF came over on a visitors visa for a month, back in 2011. Being in IT it did not take him long to get a job so he got a temp work visa and stayed. Myself and kids back in UK, and as you say could not afford both costs of living, so I discussed with mortgage company, put house on market and didn't pay the mortgage. MIL leant us some money to live on and all got paid back when house sold. Needs must in this game
