We about to put in PR application but are wondering whether it would be a more viable option for my husband to attempt to find employment and go down the WP route whilst we wait the supposed 4 years. Has anyone successfully (or unsuccessfully) followed this route? Does obtaining a WP first speed up the PR application? Positive, or negative feedback would be much appreciated!

Yes people have gone down the WP route - us being one of them.
The biggest Plus for this is that it generally takes 3 -6 months instead of 4 years - but you do take a huge gamble as the WP ties you to working for the employer who you go to Canada to work for. If you do not like this job or get laid off etc, then you have to go through the whole LMO procedure again before you can start to work for another employer.
You can use a job offer to get there on a WP or to gain extra points for a PR application - do a search for AEO in the forum.
Think personally which route you take it is a personal choice.
Here is the link for the WP with HRDSC if you havent already read this.

Thanks Gay for your useful comments. This is something we would have to think carefully about as we have 3 children, one in year 8 at high school. You were obviously successful in obtaining employment, did this speed up your PR application? Thanks.

We applied for PR in August 2005 and landed in Nova Scotia Jan 07 on a WP. It's a very long wait in that PR queue so 7 months later we were advised to be proactive and apply for jobs while we waited. Hubby got lucky and here we are

Hi Gaynor
Thanks for the link. My brother is 48 and is desperately trying to find ways to emigrate to Canada. A normal visa application would be far a too long process given his age. This is why he is considering the W.P route.

he needs to do something pretty damn quick then as i think the threshold for PR for Canada is 49 - sure someone will correct me if i am wrong !
What line of work is he in as someone on here could very well know something as to how to help him with his search. Also if he is on line get him to register on this site and then he could ask away to his hearts content.
