Default Work visa advice

Hi,

I just joined - this place looks like a good forum to get my questions answered!

I've been offered a short post-doc fellowship in Newfoundland - it's only 6 months. I have a few questions, I hope someone here can help answer.

1. How long does a work visa take to get? I'm in the UK and can travel to the embassy in London if needed. I have the offer letter in front of me, and it's from a university.
2. I need to take the post in Feb - will I have enough time?
3. I hopefully will have my PhD by Christmas. Should I wait until I'm Dr. Muppetboy before applying, or will it be ok without?

Not sure if this is the right forum to ask these other questions, please tell me where I shoudl ask if it is not!

1. How does tax work? I'm not there long, and I'm not earning much. What's the best way to reduce my tax burden?
2. How does medical insurance work? Can I use my normal business insurance (it covers me for 90 days per trip, and I plan to return at some point anyway).

Any and all advice glady welcomed!

cheers
