Default Work permits expiring and CEC

We've decided to apply via the CEC route. Our work permits (OWP - intracompany transfer) expire in October 2015. It's unlikely that we'll get PR before the work permits expire. Do we need to extend them, or is it OK to stay here on expired WPs while our PR application is being processed? Many thanks.

As FL posted, you have the option of the Bridging Open Work Permit. I applied for it about a year ago and it was fairly easy, you just need to get through the first stage of the CEC application (you get an email acknowledging that they're received the application and that all the necessary documents are there).

I think it took maybe 25-30 minutes for me to get everything together for the work permit.
