Default Work permit validity

Hello there,

I applied for the IEC visa last year in March and got accepted, I eventually got an acceptance letter stating that I had been approved and that my visa was valid until May 2014. Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances I wasn't able to travel to Canada when I originally planned (around July last year). I'm just wondering, if anyone knows, if I was to go to Canada before May would my visa still be valid for the full 12 months? As in, do the 12 months begin when you enter the country?

I'm considering going at the last minute as it seems like a waste to not use it while I've got the chance, I just wanted to make sure that my understanding was correct.

Thanks in advance for any help

The 12 months doesn't start until you 'activate' it upon entering Canada. So as long as you arrive before the date on your approval letter you should be good to go for 12 months.

That's what I assumed, thanks a lot.

So when I get there and I get hauled aside by immigration, as long as I've got my approval letter and proof of funds ($2500 I believe?), I'm good to go?

They also ask for proof of health insurance too. Although I have never been asked to show this, it's always a very good idea to have it, a) as they may very well ask for proof and b) wow it would be expensive if you got ill/had an accident!

There is a guide online for coming to Canada on IEC

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply burks, I'll definitely be getting health insurance. To get cover for a year seems absolutely worth it!

Cheers

If you're in the UK, I found GreatCover.com tended to be cheapest. You need the "backpacker" type
