Hello,

I have a question on how Work Permit helps in Canada immigration. Do I get any points
for this? Is there any validity period for work permit? Is the work permit linked to
the employer?

Factor 5 - Arranged Employment (maximum 10 points)

To obtain points for this factor, you must have a permanent job offer in Canada and
be capable of and likely to accept and carry out the job. One of the following
situations must also apply:

1. you have been working in Canada for at least one year on a temporary work
permit and:

a) your temporary work permit was confirmed by HRDC, including sectoral
confirmations;
b) you are currently working in that employment;
c) the work permit is valid for at least another 12 months from the date of your
application; and
d) your employer has made an offer to employ you on an indeterminate basis if the
permanent resident visa is issued.

OR

2. You have been working in Canada for at least one year on a temporary work
permit and:

a) your temporary work permit is exempt from HRDC confirmation requirements under an
international agreement (i.e. NAFTA, GATS) or as a result of the significant
benefit to Canada provision (i.e. intra-company transferee);
b) you are currently working in that employment;
c) the work permit is valid for at least another 12 months from the date of your
application; and
d) your employer has made an offer to employ you on an indeterminate basis if the
permanent resident visa is issued.

OR

3. You do not intend to work in Canada before being issued a permanent resident visa
and do not hold a temporary work permit and:

a) your employer has made an offer to employ you on an indeterminate basis if the
permanent resident visa is issued; and
b) your job offer has been confirmed by Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC.)
You cannot apply to HRDC yourself. Your potential employer must apply for you.

First, its not called a work permit, its called an "Employment Authorization"

Yes, if the EA has been valid for one year, will be valid for an additional 12 months
from the date of application, it is exempt from HRDC validation (under trade
agreements or the software pilot project etc), you are currently employed by the
employer for whom the EA was issued to you for, and the position that you are working
in is a permanent position, or if the employer has expressed an intent to make it an
indefinate permanent position if your PR visa is issued.

Yes there is. Long term EA's are usually issued for a period of 36 months, it may be
less or more, depending on your individual situation.

    > Is the work permit linked to the employer?

Usually yes it is. It will authorize you to work for a specific employer in a
specific capicity, and sometimes at a specific location only. If you want to switch
jobs, you have to get a new EA. In some cases an open EA may be issued as well, it
depends on the specifics of the case.
