Work permit at border - Experts please

Work permit at border - Experts please
We are currently in Canada, 6 months into a 2 year work permit (and spouse open work permit).
I am about to change jobs and understand the process is as follows:
1. obtain job offer
2. obtain new HRSDC approval
3. Apply to Vegreville for change of status.
However, Vegreville are currently stating 41 days to process the change of status. My question is can we speed this up by driving into the US (it's only an hour from here) and applying for the new work permits at the Canadian border on the way back? Of course we would have the HRSDC approval with us.
The other issue with sending our passports away to Vegreville for so long, is that we had our PR medicals in September and are hoping for passport requests soon (I know, wishful thinking
I've already emailed CHC London about this - awaiting a response).
Can anyone help?
