If your OH is in an occupation that belongs to Skill Level 0, A or B on the National Occupational Classification Matrix, you're eligible for a spousal open work permit.

Most people don't need to do medicals when they apply for temporary work permits. However, if you work with vulnerable populations (sick people, children and some others), you do need to do a medical.

You're eligible for an spousal open work permit (SOWP).

Your OH probably belongs to NOC Code #2147. If not 2147, my other guess would be NOC Code #2173. Anyway, it's probably an NOC Code that starts with 21. As you can see from the NOC Matrix, the people whose NOC Codes start with 21 belong to Skill Level A.

It's ideal to apply for an SOWP when the principal work permit holder applies for their permit, before you leave the UK. If you do that, you normally receive approval at the same time as each other. If you wait till you reach Canada and then apply for your SOWP, you could wait 2 - 3 months to get it.

With that said, I've heard that the medical, if you need it for your SOWP, can add a couple of months to the waiting time for your work permit (but would not hold up your OH's work permit).
