Default work experience reference letters

Hello,
I have searched for an answer and it is probably staring me in the face.
Re the reference letters and contracts from past employers, how far back do I have to go? Is it just 10 years or my whole career? Also I know that one of my past employment places has closed down, any suggestions?
Thank you in advance, your advice is greatly appreciated.

AFAIK it's only for the past 10 years. If the company has closed, you can write a note stating that the company has closed and can no longer obtain an updated reference letter. If you have an old reference letter after you resigned, it will be best to include a copy of it. I did the same since one of my previous company closed down.

Thanks very much, you've been a great help! I'm sure there will be a lot more questions before we finish and its good to know someone is there.

Also, if the company has closed down you may be able to find some details on the Companies House web site which you could print out to include as evidence. I think you can get the basic info there (e.g. that it was closed down and when) without having to pay anything.

I could not get any employment info from a number of old employers in the UK so contacted the Revenue in Newcastle and got an National Insurance statement dating back to when I first started working. I havent heard from CIC yet, but hope this was useful.
