You don't need to have the SIN card to start working as long as you provide the
employer with your valid SIN number. Call HRDC and ask them for the SIN number.

I have recieved AIP and got my open work authorization. I applied for a SIN card on
tuesday and HRDC said it could take up too 4 weeks before I would recieve it.

My question is

Can I start working prior to being issued a SIN Card.

On the reciept of the SIN application it states the following "The employment
insurance legislation does not prevent persons from working prior to being issued a
SIN # and card. It merely obliges the person who becomes employed in insurable
employment before he/she is registered, to apply to the Commission for a SIN # and to
produce his/her SIN card to his/her employer within 3 days of recieving it."

I called HRDC and according to them I could apply, if urgent, for the # over the
phone so as I can get it for the employer and I should show the employer my card
within three days of recieving the card but they were not sure. They asked me to call
CIC but after being held on the line for a while I thought I'd ask here.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Yes. You do not even have to obtain an SIN number over the phone, as suggested by
Andrew Miller - all you have to do, is to show the receipt you were issued at the HR
office, when you applied for your SIN, to your employer. Once you have the card, make
sure you show it to your employer as well.
