We have flown from the UK into Detroit and gone to Ambassador Bridge POE to get Visa. No real drama experienced although they are more used to dealing with US applicants.

I've never renewed anything there but I cross a few times a week. I'd take the tunnel over the bridge, the staff there seem politer and slightly more human imho
