Default will I liable for duties to import a computer from US?

We are going to land next month in Canada. I would like to ask about
customs duties.

I am residing in Hong Kong. I have purchased a brand new computer from
my friend in the US and I am having it shipped to Canada directly. I
would like to know if I can bring in this computer tax free or will I
be liable for duties ? If there are any duties, can anyone give me a
ball park figure on these duties.

I believe you will be subject to duty and taxes as the item does not meet
the test of "owned , used and in possession" prior to landing in Canada.

Check www.ccra.gc.ca for further info.

This will not meet the ownership requirements. Depending on where it is
made will determine the actual duty.

Welcome to GST land! That's the standard 7% sales tax that you pay on
everything including those items purchased outside Canada (paid at the
border.)

Fortunately I don't think you have to pay duty on this.

Yes, since you have not really owned the computer - and since you're
having it shipped to Canada, well, it's obviously never been in your
possession.

7% GST, PST and possibly an import duty, depending on where the computer
was manufactured.
