Default When do I need to surrender my passport ?

Hi,
I'm about to fire off a spousal application for permanent residency, at what stage in the process do the Canadian authorities need to hold on to my UK passport, is right away ?
I'm hoping to visit my Canadian wife and son in Vancouver over Christmas, and it looks like you can't get a second UK passport unless there's a proven *business* need, there's not in my case.
I've got an application underway for an Irish passport but that won't be processed in time for Christmas.
When the Canadians do ask for my passport how soon do I have to respond ? I'm hoping they leave enough time for my Christmas visit.

Once you receive the passport request, you'll have 45 days to send it in. Those of us who applied outland in July still haven't received our passport requests. If you're just applying now, you will be fine for Christmas.

You might find this chart handy (made by a person on a different forum):
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...CJyi-IYE#gid=0

The column entitled "PPR" refers to when people got their passport requests. As you can see, there's a sizeable chunk of time between when people submitted their applications and when they received their passport requests.

Enjoy Christmas with your family!

You have 45 days as was said but if you have travel already booked, you could ask for an extension to this - I know someone who was overseas when the request came and so couldnt give up their passports until after the 45 days expired.

Good luck
