Default What's the likely-hood of getting a job without a visa

Hi,

I have been given some advice to go for interviews before applying for a visa and to try and get a job before my visa. Problem is I can't see an employer waiting 9-12 months for you to start! What is the likely-hood of getting a job before I get my visa?

Thanks,

James :-)

Greetings and welcome to BE!

A lot would depend on what you do for a living.

If you could give a few details, such as your profession and what Province you are hoping to go to (if you have a preference) then more help can be given.

If you are under 30 (or 35 if an Irish National) you might want to consider applying for an IEC working holiday visa when they are available towards the end of the year. They are issued on a first come, first served basis but are valid for 1 year (open work permit) with the option to apply for a second.

Hi,

and thanks for replying. I am a computer programmer, specialising in Microsoft .NET.

My family and I primarily want to move to Vancouver, although if we can't get there, Toronto is our next choice.

Unfortunately I am 39.

Thanks.

It's such a shame you didn't look into this earlier in the year as Computer Programmers were on "the list" of professions eligible to apply for the Federal Skilled Worker stream. Unfortunately, it's highly likely that most if not all have been filled for this category by now.

I did find this company who are advertising for several positions from people who have worked in a team environment dealing with 'different countries'. It may be possible to see if they would be prepared (provided they qualify) to nominate you for PNP, enabling you to obtain a TWP once nomination was approved. It's worth a shot anyway! http://www.citiustech.com/aboutus/careers.aspx

You can see more about Computer Programmer job availability here: http://www.workingincanada.gc.ca/rep...abs_container2 - you can choose different Provinces etc., and look at current job openings.

I believe BC would be an easier option to obtain PNP for than Ontario, which is particularly onerous to obtain. Once you obtain PNP nomination approval, you would be able to apply for a TWP at the port of entry; presently nomination approval for BC is taking between 8 and 16 weeks.

If you have the time/money, it could be a good to go to events in your field in Canada. A french friend of mine got a job offer from a company in Etobicoke (ON) just by doing networking in an event in Toronto. He worked remotely until the WP was granted. He's a java developer.

I have been trying to find remote working positions but they seem to be very thin on the ground.

Thanks for the heads up. I will take a look at the links. I did link at the one above but they don't seem to have a Canadian location on their list.

Both of these jobs are with that company in Canada (Vancouver).

http://www.workbc.ca/Jobs/JobSeekers...ompanyid=97908

According to this google.ca search, they also have jobs in Ontaro: http://www.google.ca/search?q=Citius...iw=958&bih=487

I can't seem to track down a Canadian physical address but they do have a contact number and email for North America which you could probably use. http://www.citiustech.com/aboutus/contactus.aspx

You could also use this email (no gaps) as I found it on one of their job listings for Ontario: email: canada_jobs @ citiustech.com
