I think you will find Canada is more of a socialist state than Ye Olde England. You won't starve unless you are sponsored and then you sponsor will be liable for support. But then again there are loads of jobs here too.

You do know that the $12,000 is just a minimum, right? If you think you'll need more you should save up more.

I'd be very surprised if a country were to offer benefits to somebody who had just turned up, having never paid into the system in the past (i.e. in the form of taxes). Surely immigrating to Canada is a privilege, maybe even a luxury? Nobody's making you go after all .

Interesting thread this..... I have often wondered what the answer is.

Just a little note - you can come here with 10 times this amount but if you can't find a job then you will eventually run out of money. Canada does not have streets paved with gold and sometimes it can be very difficult for new immigrants to get themselves "in the door" where employment is concerned, so try not to be too cocky with your replies. Once you are all here you will quickly understand what I am talking about - life in Canada can be quite harsh for some!

You haven't missed anything. I believe he thinks the 12k is an introductory offer ( like buying into a club ). Thats what is recommended/required as a min for a certain number of people to barely survive, and i mean barely without employment.

I hope I didn't come across as cocky, sorry. I am personally cacking myself about whether we'll ever have enough money to do this (see my thread on the subject), but I did still take issue with the idea that if you choose to move to Canada, they are somehow obliged to provide you with cash. That would be great, but there would be nobody left in Britain if it were true !

At today's rate, $12,000 is about £5,577- what's that, maybe 3 months' money if you're lucky? I definitely wouldn't emigrate with only that much, especially if the job situation is as we are led to believe, i.e. dire. WAY too much stress!
