Default Visiting, Looking for Work & Then Staying??

Hi, Everyone!

We are in the process of researching a move to Calgary, AB from the UK and would be interested to hear if the following scenario is possible.

Are you able to fly into Calgary with out any visa or work permits and stay in a rental property for say 2months and then seek employment from within the province? Of course with the intention of then applying for a work permit from within Canada along with the all important job offer & labour market opinion?

I am a Carpenter by trade and understand that my trade is sought after, although i feel that unless i am in the province i am being overlooked without the face to face contact!

Any help / info would be great !

All the best, Simon.

You can't apply for work permit in Canada - you must apply through proper visa post or at the Canadian port of entry (if eligible).

That's what we are essentially doing as well. If you can find a job or an employer who will go through the work permit process with you, you have to go to the States or the nearest ports of entry to get a work permit. We've heared from an immigration lawyer that Alberta is encountering some backlog in processing LMO/E-LMO so expect to be there longer than 2 months even if you get a job offer right away.

We came over for the winter season in Whistler and quite coincidently got a job offer, LMO etc. We applied at POE by flagpolling around the US border. The upside of this is you get your TWP immediatley, the downside is you need to make sure you have all your information and documentation and you are able to apply at POE.
