You will find this a problem, mainly due to the fact that Canada doesn't have a
green card.

Okay fine... I just use a word Green Card. There is no such thing in the US, as
well!. I meant can permanent resident of the US obtain Permanent Residency in Canada
without abandoning his/her status in the US?

Absolutely not!

It real plain in the words "Permanent Resident".

Resident essentially means "to live somewhere" and permanent in this context means
where you "potentially forever in a legal manner".

Now, how can you live in two countries potentially forever in a legal manner at the
same time ? It is physically impossible.

Legally, it's also impossible. Canada will void your Canadian PR as soon as you
obtain US PR. The US could void its US PR if you attempt to claim rights to Canadian
PR after getting US PR. Bottom line is you could lose BOTH. One fellow from somewhere
in Africa, if memory serves, lost his citizenship in his own country on taking PR
elsewhere, by their laws. He got both Canadian and US PR at the same time, and was
caught and lost both. He ended up stateless, unable to remain legally in Canada, the
US, and unable to return to his home country.

Snehaji, may I ask you why would anyone want to get a Canadian PR (permanent
resident) status while they already have one from the number 1 economy on the planet,
just out of pure curiosity?

You've had a lot of unsympathetic answers, so I'm going comment even though I'm not
an expert.

I believe you'll find that a U.S. citizen, whether naturalized or native-born, may
take another country's status without jeopardizing their U.S. citizenship, even
though official policy may make it seem otherwise. This comes up quite a bit in
misc.immigration.usa and the answer always is that once you have U.S. citizenship
it's very difficult to lose it; the courts have consistently held in favour of people
from whom the INS and other authorities have tried to cancel citizenship (of course,
that's an expensive and time-consuming process which will be small comfort the day
the border guard turns you away...)

Permanent residency is another matter. Superficially the requirements for keeping
Canadian Pemanent Residency (being in Canada a certain number of days in a three-year
period) may not conflict with the more ambiguous U.S. requirement to maintain a
presence there. However, this is very dicey. You should definitely consult with a
U.S. immigration lawyer on that one.
