Default UK transit/Tourist visa

Friends,
For by transit(toursit visa) of UK,on the way to Vancouver for our landing, I have 2 options
1) get invite from my brother in law who is in UK on a project of IBM.He is there for over 2 yrs but he is not a permanent resident or citizen. Will his invite be sufficient?
2) Option 2 is to book a Hotel and cancel it later after UK visa is issue. Will this be fine.
We are a family of four. Please if any one has any idea on this then please let me know.
I have a 12 hour break at London and my nationality is India.

Hi Lancastrian, have read this and found that getting a visa at the airport may be difficult and so people adviced me to apply for visa from UAE where I am currently. For doing that I have 2 options which I mentioned earlier.Get an invite or go for hotel. My question is will my brother in laws invite be sufficient or I go for hotel reservation and cancel it later?

Not sure of the UKBA rules but from reading the link Im assuming you will have the Canadian Immigrant Visa in your passport and your COPR forms and onward ticket to Canada.

Look at the exemptions in particular #1
