No, I am not suggesting it never happens, but a lot of people have been refused boarding without proof of status in Canada, when they attempt to fly on a one-way ticket.

Air Canada is pretty clear on its website that a returning PR can fly without a PR Card if they have a visa-waiver passport.

As for other airlines, perhaps ask in advance what the conditions of carriage are?
