temporary work visas?
Have many done this route of getting in and applying for PR once there?

Yes - there are two ways to do this:
1) If you can get HRSDC approved work (i.e LMO if required), then it's the quickest and easiest way to come becoming a PR.
2) Coming over on a working holiday visa (BUNAC). If you qualify this is a good way to experience living & working in Canada and may lead to an opportunity to get HRSDC approved work.
