Hi there if you look here it will tell you all you need to know about qualifications and their relevance in Canada.

It may be that you both need to get Canadian qualifications as strictly speaking UK ones aren't recognised as such, but they do go some way towards proving you know what you are talking about!

Look upon your brit quals as your "apprenticeship" in readiness for you to gain the Canadian equivalent (and I use the term loosely because as far as I am aware there are very few if any jobs in Canada that convert UK nquals to Canadian - I could be wrong though and someone will be here to ut us both right!)

mmmmm just tried that link and it didn't work for me - go into the Wiki, into the Canada bit and type "qualifications in the search and it will come up with the info you need

Although what you've said is true of many occupations, carpentry is not a trade that requires certification / accreditation in Alberta. The employer only needs to satisfy him/herself that the prospective employee has the required skills and experience for the job.

The Red Seal website has links to provincial apprenticeship websites. If a person follows the link to the province in which he/she is interested, he/she can look up the requirements for his/her specific trade.

There is a link to this information in the Wiki article called Skilled Trades-Canada. The Wiki called Equivalency of Qualifications-Canada, which you mentioned, also has links to relevant information.

Also I'd like to know how my qualification fares in Canada. CITB is usually recognised the world over. I'm hoping my CISRS card covers me there but i've already asked about this and am waiting for a reply. Cant seem to understand the thing on wiki abaout them.

Yeah, but only Dublin, the rest of Ireland is fckued mate. We're taking on at Dublin airport and there's a big job at Landsdowne road, i know who is running that job as well, there's about 3 years work on there and could be 7 years on airport as well.

My OH is a drywaller and had both CITB and CIS in the UK - but it doesn't transfer to Canada.

yeah i know, already had an email back, there's no qualification for scaffolding over there or any training apparently, lol. They give you a job based on whether you can do it or not:confused:

It doesn't matter to me one way or the other, but you may be interested to know that working for free still is illegal.

This may fall into the category of "too much information" from your point of view. However, if you're interested in finding out more about it, you might read the Wiki article called Volunteer Work-Canada.

The danger is not necessarily that Citizenship and Immigration will find out about your "volunteer work" through their own genius. The danger is that, if one of your "colleagues" at your place of "volunteer employment" feels annoyed towards you for the slightest reason, they might snitch on you.
