Hi --

In 3-5 years, my husband and I are considering an eventual immigration to Canada, but
we're both teachers (college writing and English for me, history for him) -- we're
disappointed to see that teachers aren't on the General Occupations List... are there
plenty of teachers in Canada?

Mariann .. used to a teacher shortage here in the US

Yes there is a teacher shortage in Canada but the general occupation list which controls
who and what occupations are acceptable was last updated in 1993 and revised using new a
new coding system in 1997. What the situation will be in 3 years is anybody's guess.

This was the case for a long time but it has lead to a glut of teachers hitting
retirement age at about the same time. Combined with the arrival of the "echo"
generation at the secondary level and what seems to be a plan by the Ontario
government (through enticement and harassment) to clear out as many
older/militant teachers as possible, I'd say that there will be plenty of demand
for teachers in the coming decade. Some articles have indicated as many as
20,000 over 10 years.

Hello Marianne,

It is truly frustrating for many otherwise qualified people to find themselves
excluded from immigrating to Canada simply due to a severely outdated
occupations list and selection criteria. This is all about to change with the
new immigration legislation working its way through parliament. A greater
emphasis is to be placed on knowledge of language (20%) and other skills, as
opposed to requirement to have a particular occupation on a list. In 3-5 years
(or sooner) you might have a better chance to apply.

And in case you wish to make the application sooner you should know that the
province of Quebec has a selection grid which allows for those without an
occupation on a list, to apply. This grid attempts to measure employability and
mobility (between jobs).
