Default Student visa issues - Attn Mr Miller

I am currently in London UK, looking to come to Canada to study for a
Canadian Commercial Pilots Licence. My wife would also like to come
and study to become a teacher.

I expect my training to take up to around 18 months. Once completed
this will enable me to fly commercially but ONLY in Canada. Once our
training is over, are we able to apply to change the type of visa we
have, to enable us to begin working with our new found qualifications?
Or would we have to go home and re-apply? Our long term aim is apply
for permanent residency. It is quite crucial that we do this right,
as my training will cost in the region of $30k so i dont want to waste
my time or money. Also once obtained, I need to keep my licence
current, which I cannot do in the UK, as its a Canadian qualification.
We will have upwards of $100k to sustain us while we are in Canada.

Please advise as best you can.

Many thanks

You will need to apply for work permit after your potential employer applies
for and is granted HRDC validation for job offer - it may not be easy as
employer would have to demonstrate that no Canadian candidate can be found
after several months of national advertising of the position. So, before you
make any decision you should do your homework first - research the job
market in your future occupation and see if there is a shortage, a balance
or oversupply of people with qualifications you'll be gaining. You may have
a big problem getting HRDC validation for a job where there is no shortage
of candidates in Canada. In such case you won't be able to get a work permit
and your only option will be to wait until you become a PR. What about your
qualifications for PR visa now? Do you qualify? Maybe you should consider
applying now for PR visa - you may contact me directly for free evaluation
of your chances and options.

My experience with job hunting for pilots is that you have to be desperate,
because there are so many who are willing to work for peanuts already. Your
plan is probably not workable if you depend upon getting a job in Canada on
completion of your training.
