Hi, I'm a landed immigrant and sponsored my spouse who is also in canada. We applied
for the sponsorship last september and she has been approved in principal. From the
approved in principal, she got the unconditional working permit. Now she is waiting
for her PR application to approve and now comes with a new twist. I got laid off
today, will this affect her application? If no, what if I go ahead and applied for
the EI, will it affect the application? Thanks.

WK.

Hi:

Your spouse's application for Canadian permanent residency should not be affected by
the fact that you were laid off today. There is no financial criteria for the
sponsorship of spouses. Go ahead and apply for EI.

Yours truly, Ingrid Y. Chen, B.A., LL.B.
