the that affect my application to sponsor my wife.

I sure hope so. If you aren't making money and paying taxes, and she can't
invest her way in, who exactly do you expect should pay? Hard-working
Canadian taxpayers?

Being on unemployment insurance implies you worked within the last year. It certainly won't be a positive thing that you are
unemployed. It would help if you were employed at the date of application. But they look at the merits of the whole application.
Keep in mind they don't ask to see your bank statement and on a spousal sponsorship you are not required to have a certain minimum
income. I was approved to sponsor my wife and I wasn't employed or on unemployment insurance (and was never on any social
assistance). But I was able to persuade CIC I could look after my wife, and we sent a persuasive total application package showing
our genuine relationship and our wishes to be together in Canada as husband and wife. I wish you luck.

Not an expert. Just a successful spousal sponsor and regular reader of this newsgroup.

Why?? EI is an insurance we pay for in the event we loose our job by no
fault of our own. It's not like welfare where you don't put anything into
the system and only take out. Now I have no idea if this will affect his
application or not, but it doesn't say anything bad about the mans
character. I have been paying EI, use to be UI, for my entire working life
and have never once collected a penny. I would almost look forward to a
short term lay off so I could recover some of the premiums I have paid them
over the years.

Being on EI is not a bar to filing a sponosrship for your spouse.
