Default IT situation in Canada

this is for all of you wondering about the state of high tech jobs in
Canada.......

i've been in the industry now for about 10 years. I 've had numerous jobs
both in tech and in consulting. I have many, many friends in the industry
also.

Canada's IT segment is not doing well. Jobs are few and far between unless
you want to do first level phone support.

Code jobs have largely dried up. Unless you are an top notch code master,
with a lot of North American experience, good luck. The embemded market
seems to be somewhat better, but not much.

If you are web designer, or a flash person, don't even bother. Thousands
upon thousands are still looking for work.

The core IT market is difficult. Only the best and top people get hired. So
far I have seen people with lots of experience get the jobs.....

I failed to see your point. I think the IT market at one point of time was a
refuge for people from all walks of life (good and bad). Like you said:
"Only the best and top people
get hired".. Shouldn't this be the case anyway!

I completely agree with you there.

I went into the computing industry 10 years ago because I have a genuine
passion for the technology. After all, I started writing C at a very
young age, and landed my first UNIX job at the age of 16.

It got irritating around ~1998 when so many 'paper' candidates started
flooding the market. I always hoped that they would disappear as fast
as they arrived, but sadly that doesn't seem to be the case.

Oh well.

I agree. I love computer networking ,troubleshooting and fixing stuff. I obtained a great position in Canada after 5 months of searching, sending resumes and interviewing. I just had my 3 month review, my boss was impressed by the amount of work I'm getting done and the quailty of my work.
Slackers step aside, only the smartest, nicest, hard working folks need apply.
