Default Settling Trip Via the US

We are finally relocating to Halifax in mid-January, two years after we activated our PR. Looking at flights, the cheapest/best way to do this (and easiest with Canadian customs for our goods to follow) is to fly to Boston, stay overnight and then fly to Halifax the next day. We have two small children so the alternative of flying to Toronto and back again is less appealing (plus we want to do the goods to follow paperwork at Halifax if possible). As we are doing one way flights, the direct Air Canada flight is too expensive so not many options.

Our question is are there any downsides to going via the US? I vaguely remember seeing something about one way tickets and ESTA issues but I can't recall the details. We have our PR cards, except my youngest daughter who we need to sponsor when we arrive.

Any advice appreciated!!

Thanks!

Have you tried for flights to Montreal as there are connecting flights from Montreal to Halifax?

Thanks, we know we can connect elsewhere in Canada we just didn't want to do the goods to follow exercise inbetween flights ideally and it makes it a really long day with the kids.
Hopefully Former Lancastrian will pop by and be able to answer our question re going via the US.

I am sure many have done it this way but the potential hassle is with US Customs on entering the USA first. Apparently there was a rule using the VWP and ESTA that travel cannot end in a contiguous country (Canada) but very few USCBP officers know about it or enforce it. This may have also been taken off their books due to changes with the VWP and ESTA requirements as you can now Transit the USA and from their website it states

Yes. Eligible nationals or citizens of countries that participate in the VWP require either an ESTA or a visa to transit the United States. If a traveler is only planning to transit through the United States en route to another country, when he or she completes the ESTA application, the traveler should enter the words "In Transit" and his or her final destination in the address lines under the heading “Address While In The United States.”

https://www.cbp.gov/travel/internati...-system-travel

Normally transit means flying into one country and onwards to another country and remaining in the airport so Im not sure on the US rules about an overnight stay. The Canadians have similar rules but travellers cannot leave the airport and travel with a specific airline and only from certain countries.

You are overnighting in the US so why not overnight in Canada instead. I understand after a long flight you don't relish the thought of doing a Goods To Follow List but providing the line up at Customs Secondary isn't too long it won't take long as you have already done the landing so no need to go through the Immigration Secondary as that's been done. On a good day after collecting bags this could take less than 30 minutes if well prepared. No hassle about having a one way ticket either.

Your choice in the end.

Thanks FL, great advice as always. We won't take the risk with the US so will probably just fly via Toronto and do it in one day. Four hour connection time so should hopefully have plenty of time to get the goods to follow done.

Thanks again and Merry Christmas!
