I am looking for some advice about my work references please

I am not sure what to do about my references as I have currently worked in the same place for 18 years with the same Management however the company has changed hands 4 times now and 2 companys no longer trade.

I know it probably sounds strange when i say the same management what I mean is our head office was elsewhere so when the company changed name everything in head office changed however our workshop stayed the same

So what I am unsure of is:
What do I do about the 2 companys that no longer trade I dont even know if I have a old payslip off that long ago as it was 10 and 7 years ago?

and as I have had the same manager my whole working career could I get him to do me a reference for the whole time I have worked and stick a cover letter explaining this? or does it need to come from each company?
