Smile Retaining British Citizenship on immigration

Hi

Have searched through various threads to try to locate info about dual nationality that can answer my question...no luck so here goes - any help greatfully received?

If my OH and I, as British Citizens, apply and obtain canadian citizenship, can we keep our British Citizenship and therefore become dual nationals or do we have to relinquish our British citizenship?

Prob a simple question but please help?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can have dual citizenship. You lose some very minor rights, like being able to be represented by the British Consulate in Canada.

You only lose British Citizenship by actually writing to the Secretary of State and asking for it to be revoked. There are a couple of other ways of losing it, but not if you're native I don't think. Not many do, and the UK has no problems with dual citizenship unlike some countries.

Also it's worth noting that if you have a child born in Canada in most case they too are considered British (by descent) and would be entitled to British Passports.

Naturalised British citizens do not lose their status upon becoming Canadian citizens.

Only if at least one parent is British otherwise than by descent, or child meets certain other requirements to be registered as a British citizen.

Thanks so much to all for your replies, it has put my mind at ease.

The extra information will be very useful to friends who are considering the same life route as us, I think 3 girls aged 7,6 and 5 are keeping me busy enough at the moment

Thanks to all
K
