Default Request received for passports but one soon to expire....

Hi there

We rather excitedly have received an email requesting our passports to put the visas in!

However, a question:

It states that we need to land within a year of our medical (i.e by 1 April 2011) and if any of the family's passports runs out before we land, all visas are void and we need to restart the process....

Our daughtern is on a 5-year British passport and hers runs out in Dec 2010. She has a French passport also. Should we just send in the French passport (they are aware of it) or should we renew the Brit passport now (within the 45 day deadline) and send off the new one (although they won't have that one on record...)

Also, what happens if we do land before Dec 2010 and then her passport runs out - what happens to the landing stamp / visa?

Many thanks for your help

TM

I cant comment on the French passport bit, but your daughter will get a PR card once she lands in Canada anyway, so there will be no need to 'transfer' the visa over to the new passport as she can use the PR card to enter Canada afterwards. Thats obviously if she gets the visa in her current passport and lands before it expires.

Hi

We had the same problem, and we were told to renew the passport before we sent it in. There is a form to update details including passport details which you send in as well.

Congratulations on gaining PR

1. You should note that the COPR (visa) will only be valid to the expiry of the medical 1 year or the expiry of the passport, so in your case all the COPRs will expire Dec/10.

I would renew the passport first. It is usually quite quick to get a new passport in the UK.

I had a similar problem and was lucky enough to get the new passport back within a week. You can also arrange to renew the passport by appointment.

Hi
We had this problem. It is better to renew it now...takes about two weeks at this time of the year as it is not busy yet. Renewing it in Canada is an expensive and some say not straightforward thing to do. Any remaining validity up to 9 months will be added to the new passport, so you will not lose out.
Hope this helps

We were in the same boat as well, and renewed two passports (from Canada to UK for new UK passports, then back here again so we could send all 5 to CIC within 45 days.) It worked fine - all we have to do now is work out when we've got time to get to the border to land!

Thanks all for your replies - really, really helpful. And doh hadn't clogged about the PR card bit - so of course passport is only an issue for landing. Anyways, don't fancy landing in Montreal mid-Winter - funnily enough....(will save that gem until we live there for real... So will probably be going before Dec 10 BUT may as well just renew her passport now.

Anyone else in or moving to Montreal - would love to be in touch.

Best
