Re: Redundancy, TWP
Just my company. Since I got here, quite a number of people given the chop, support, sales, development. Sad really.
One final thing, my partner is prepared to sponsor me as she has PR and applying for citizenship.
She mentioned that I can apply for WP within a few weeks. I have been struggling to find the details on the CA website. Thoughts?

Would we still have to married for at least a year, like common law partner?
Within a few weeks of what? Sorry but I'm not clear what she's talking about here. You can apply for a work permit if she sponsors you, but it takes 5 months to obtain (sounds like that's the page you were originally looking at on the CIC website actually!). Or does she mean a different type of work permit. You're not by any chance aged 30 or under are you?
I am nearly 50.

If she sponsors you under "Inland" spousal sponsorship... as Christmasoompa said, a work permit application can be submitted with the spousal sponsorship application - but it takes around 5 months to get one - I am sponsoring my spouse or partner who is in Canada. Can they work while their application is being processed?
If you are thinking of going down the spouse route I'd suggest reading our wiki:

You are in software support if I recall correctly? Have you looked into the Atlantic Provinces Pilot Project? You might be able to get a TWP while your PR application is being processed Application for a Temporary Work Permit – Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program if you could find an approved company to offer you a job - and if I recall correctly, you might not need an LMIA. Just a thought, as an alternative..

Put simply, from what you've said you have two choices - you find a new sponsoring employer that cannot find a Canadian willing, or able, to do the job and is happy to pay $1000 for the LMIA app. They apply for the LMIA and once you (hopefully) have it, you then pop to the border and get your new TWP so you can start work.
Or you get married, your then wife sponsors you for PR and you apply for an open work permit.
You could also look at other provinces (as suggested by Siouxie) and their PNP's, but unless you (and your gf) are prepared to move, that's probably a non starter, plus you'd have the issue of a province potentially not believing you'll want to settle there if you've been living elsewhere and rejecting your application.
Best of luck.
