Default Purchasing a car: US or Canada ?????

Hello All,

I recently did got my medical done. If all goes well I should be
moving to Canada in a few months. Does anyone what sought of tax
structure exist in Canada for purchasing a new/used Car. I heard that
the taxes on car purchases in Canada could be much higher as compared
to purchasing one in US. What option should I go for?

Any insight would be higly appreciated.

Thanks!

Depends on where you're comparing to in the US. I know some states that
charge you a declining "owner tax" as well as road tax that work out far
more expensive than the GST/PST here.

Most people find cars cheaper here.

Firstly Canadian dealers are not allowed to sell to US
citizens/residents. If they do, they could lose their dealership
license. Saying that, I'm not sure if there is a restriction for US
dealers selling to Canadians.

Taxes aside, market prices are often lower on cars in Canada. My car,
adjusted for exchange rates at the time, was almost $3000US cheaper in
Canada.

I just sold my US made car in Canada and my friend sold his Canadian made
car in US.

Anyone can sell anybody from anywhere as long as you have valid license,
insurance, certified cheque to pay the whole amount.

I don't know whether there is a restriction imposed on the dealer about
cross border sale. I don't think that is the case.

Importing a vehicle from another country is a long process even between US
and Canada.

I would rather buy local made car to avoid all the hassle to get license
plate.

i don't think that's true because when I lived in Detroit, I heard radio
commercials from Windsor car dealers.. come to Windsor to buy a car and it's
still cheaper after paying tax to uncle sam.

The dealers do have such restrictions as a part of their dealership
agreement.

I'll try to find the exact numbers, but it's because the manufacturers price
to market.
