Question Psychiatric History

I'm sorry if this is a daft question but would a history of depression medication and psychiatrist referrals affect someone's application to move to Canada?

Thanks

Unfortunately, yes. When you go for your medical, you're likely to require a specialist report - have a hunt on the forum for more info. It shouldn't stop you being accepted (unless you are deemed to be a danger to others, which I assume is unlikely), but will cause a delay/hassle/extra cost.

Thank you for your swift reply. So hopefully the worst should be that it takes longer and costs more?

Does anybody here have personal experience of this?

Thanks again for all info and advice

Hopefully yes. For personal experience info, do a search of the forum as I suggested - there are loads of threads from others who have had depression and will tell you all about the medicals etc.

How far back in history? I suffered from severe depression in the past (medication, psychiatrists etc). I looked on a site that had guidlines for Dr's doing immigration medicals, it said that the Dr needs to be concerned if the mental illness is current or from the past two years. Earlier than that isn't really a concern.

You will prob be referred for a current psychiatric report after your medicals, mostly it just means more time and more expense, but you should be good.

I got through, I now have Canadian PR.

My husband suffered from depression (about 12 months), but medication and counselling ended 18 months ago and he has honestly never been better. We were asked for extra information - a report from a psychiatrist from London office (applying spousal outland route) before it was registered London was processing his file. The report was really positive with no concerns for his health or others. It didn't cost us anything as his NHS specialist did the form. We had to send it to the doctor who did his original medical for them to send to London. That was three months ago. We were asked for more information about a separate issues (signing a declaration stating wouldn't sponsor child we have no access to). We haven't heard anything further. I have always said we would hear Dec or Feb when we started the process. we hear this month!

I'm glad someone brought this up......I too was diagnosed with depression and had medication only (no other referrals etc) for a few months when I was 13 due to school bullying....I'm 25 now and had have no problem or treatment at all for it since because I havent needed it. At the time it was quite severe - i told my doctor I wanted to end my life....bit dramatic I know but it was just the circumstances at the time and was only for a few months.

Given this is now 12 years ago...do you think I need to mention this on the Application for PR...i.e. where it states have you ever had any serious mental/physical illness? I've ticked no for this but do you think it should be mentioned? Also will I need my doctor to write some kind of note or something?

My OH was asked questions about his health and he just answered truthfully. he contemplated not saying anything, but we didn't want it to come up later and look lid we were hiding it. So, it will depend on what questions you are asked and what the doctor includes in their medical that goes to the embassy. My view is being truthful is better. If it was so long ago and you haven't had any recurring problems I don't see what you have to worry about. Good luck.

that's really helpful - I think it's better to put too much information than not enough. It's difficult to know how much information to put sometimes because if you put too much you can end up causing unnecessary problems/delays and if not enough if it looks like you're hiding something!

Sorry for the delay and thank you all so much for you input on this issue, it is much appreciated.

May I also ask if anyone knows what the case may be if it wasn't simply depression? For example, a personality disorder diagnosis? I haven't been diagnosed with anything like that thankfully, just depression, though I am curious.

Thanks again.

CIC are looking for two things
1 cost
2 threat to public health

in terms of a psyciatric illness this would boil down to are you on expense meds? Are you likely to require inpatient care in a facility?
And are you likely to cause harm to anyone else?

These are questions any report you get should address, please don't think I'm being inany way callous but those are pretty much the facts

Sorry - I'm on holiday right now and don't have time to compile a more detailed reply but if you search my name in the threads you should find my story and possibly some of the other applicants who I have replied to. If you want more info just get in touch.
Good luck!
