PR renewal / citizenship question

Quick question if anyone can help.

I have PR, but now has came the time for renewal.

I have applied for canadian citizenship. It has been acknowledge / received by CIC, so is currently in process.

Q : Do I have to renew my PR (send forms/new photos/pay fee) or am I 'exempt' in any way due to my citizenship application?...

Re: PR renewal / citizenship question

So your PR card has expired. If you do nothing, you lose no rights, other than international travel.

It'll likely take a while to get citizenship in current environment. I'd personally renew my PR card so I could travel at short notice, if things open up again.

No, you do not HAVE to apply for another PR card IF you do not want to travel internationally. If you do without a valid PR card and no Canadian passport, you will not easily be able to get back into Canada (only exception being if you drive across a US / Canada land border). You would need a PRTD to get onto a commercial flight.

No. No 'exemptions' apply just because you have your citizenship application in progress. Once it is approved and you have your citizenship then then apply for and get your Canadian passport, then you are golden!

My wife will be in a similar position to you in a year or so. It sucks hugely to apply for both citizenship AND a PR card renewal (we will do this as we want to continue to travel outside of Canada) simply because of the very long citizenship processing timescales but that's life I guess!

There is no legal requirement to have or renew a PR card - you only need it for international travel - so if no intention of travelling internationally, there is no need of one (unless you wanted it for ID purposes). :)

I will WAIT to apply for a Canadian Citizenship even though I can from May 2021. The timescales for Citizenship are going to be so long due to COVID-19 backlog. I see on this forum people have submitted application in September 2019 and still to hear ANY PROGRESS.

In the meantime, I intend to renew my PR card due to expire in Jan 2023 when the time comes.

Don't see myself doing any INTERNATIONAL travelling for several years.

If we go anywhere it will be to the USA via a land crossing.

My wife is in a similar position and timescale to you. We will probably apply in Q3 2021 as she will need an English test. But we will also likely have to renew her PR Card due to the excessive citizehship wait times as we will be doing international flights when vaccinated and allowed.
