Default PR card holder/US-Canada-USA

I may be off from this board, however one of you knowledgable may help me please...

My child, who is a Canadian permanent resident card holder and presently studying in USA with a H4 visa status. His H4 approval notice (form I-797) is not yet stamped on his passport as he had not been out of USA and canada so far.

This X-mas, my son is planning to fly from USA to Canada and then fly back to USA before school reopens. I was wondering whether at US airport while re-entering due to his seperate approval notice I-797, there would be any issue for him to re-enter.

Last time in summer we went to canada we went by car with seperate approval notices (I-79/I129) , and as our stay in Canada that time was for 10 days, at border US immigration staff saw our I-79/I129 and allowed us to come in, saying something like as we were out of USA and in Canada for less than 30 days, so H1 and H4 visa stamping in passport was not necessary and approval notices were fine.

I will appreciate your suggestions on this please...Ingo thanks
