HI guys

Can anyone advise what you do when your PR card expires.

My daughter decided not to stay for her full two years and returned to Scotland and got married. She has now come over for a visit, and border patrol were very strict with her at Toronto airport as she has not retained PR status - he mentioned she had to contact the embassy to cancel her PR card (which she has misplaced) she is here for two weeks and we were hoping to go through to the states for a couple of days but she is worried she will not get back into the Canada. Her UK passport has another 2 years to run so we are unsure what to do, who to contact etc. Any advice woudl be appreciated.

Stay in Canada for 2 week, deal with it when she goes back home. There is no certainty once she leaves to go anywhere (US included) they will let her back in. Won't find out until she tries it. Is it worth it for a two day trip?

Plan 'b' take everything with her and get a flight home from the US if she cannot get back in.

I doubt she would get anything sorted here in 2 weeks.

Im assuming your daughter is a PR and cannot meet the 730 day residence requirement. Was she formally reported by CBSA when she returned and given a removal order or asked to voluntarily relinquish her PR status?
Contacting the embassy and cancelling her PR card is not a CBSA/CIC option so that bit confuses me. If she has not been reported then she could leave and go to the US but on return could be questioned about her PR status.
Even then she would be admitted as a PR as the 30 day appeal period even if she was initially reported has not expired plus 7 days allowance for mailing and then a 30 day period to leave.

thanks for reply. She said that the guy talking to her did not know what to do and there were 4 of them scratching their heads - eventually one girl told him to over-ride the computer. He told her though she would not be allowed to reenter Canada until she had sorted it out. Going to America for 2 days is not that important but it was supposed to be 'our' little holiday together but now I am more worried about her coming back next year for an actual holiday (this trip was booked last minute as she is traveling with my mother-in-law who has terminal cancer and wanted to see her grand kids for the last time). If your daughter is a PR and has not been formally reported or voluntarily relinquished her status then even though she might be in violation of the residency obligation she is still a PR.
If she has no intention of remaining a PR then she can volunteer to relinquish her status when next entering Canada.
Eventually it will have to be dealt with.
Coming back as a visitor will be no problem providing she can satisfy an examining officer that she will not work and will leave Canada.
If she wishes to return to Canada as a PR at some later stage then she may have a problem if she does not meet the 730 day residency obligation unless she is married to a Canadian citizen and accompanying him outside of Canada.
